Billy Johnson Joins Kensai Racing with Compass360

April 12th, 2006

Hot on the heels of their recent combining of forces in Grand Am Cup competition, Kensai Racing with Compass360 have signed talented Californian Billy Johnson to drive their #76 Acura RSX for the GAC Laguna Seca race. Johnson, who had a number of stand-out races in his rookie GAC season last year, will partner with Karl Thomson, winner of the Cup ST race at Virginia International Raceway in 2005.

"Billy and I drove together a number of times last season," said Thomson, "and he did a simply amazing job every time. He's got astonishing feel in the car which he manages to translate to the engineer. Billy's a really great driver, and I'm confident that between the two of us we can put the car up front and bring home a win."

Johnson managed an impressive amount of television coverage in Compass360's BMW Z3 Coupes in 2005; getting up to second at Barber, and leading for his entire stint at Mid Ohio. The move to Acura RSXs provide the opportunity to run a more modern platform that's been prepared to exacting specifications by the Kensai Racing team.

Thomson and Johnson will join team-mates Travis Walker and Aaron Povoledo in the team's #75 RSX, rounding out a remarkably solid driver line-up. "All four of these guys are quick and easy on equipment," said Ray Lee, Kensai's Team Manager. "The goal is simple: get both cars on the podium. At Laguna, we've got a real shot at doing that."

The Grand Am Cup race at Laguna Seca (in Monterey, California) takes place Saturday May 6th, and will be televised tape-delayed on SPEED Channel.
